The Club Atlético Patronato de la Juventud Católica, known simply as Patronato, is one of the most unique and resilient institutions in Argentine football. Based in Paraná, in the province of Entre Ríos, the club currently competes in the Primera Nacional (the second division of Argentine football), undergoing a period of reconstruction after touching continental heights with their historic 2022 Copa Argentina title and their subsequent participation in the 2023 Copa Libertadores.

1. Origins, Foundation, and the Social Mission of Bartolomé Grella

The history of Club Atlético Patronato is inseparable from the figure of Father Bartolomé Grella, a priest with a deep social vocation and sporting fervor. At the beginning of the 20th century, the city of Paraná was undergoing urban transformations, and the idleness of youth from the working classes concerned ecclesiastical authorities. On February 1, 1914, Father Grella founded the institution with a clear purpose: to keep young people off the streets and away from vices through sports and Christian doctrine. From this comes its original and official name: Club Atlético Patronato de la Juventud Católica.

Initially, the club operated on land adjacent to the Santa Teresinha chapel. The club's colors, red and black (el rojinegro), have an aura of local legend. Historians point out that the choice was influenced by Newell's Old Boys of Rosario, or simply by the availability of fabrics at the time, but the fact is that the vertically striped red and black jersey became the unmistakable visual identity of Entre Ríos football.

During the first decades, Patronato consolidated its strength in the Liga Paranaense de Fútbol, winning numerous local titles and establishing itself as the greatest power in the provincial capital. The transition from an ecclesiastical charity project to a professional football club of national relevance was paved by the passion of its members and the inauguration, in 1956, of its iconic stadium, later named Estadio Presbítero Bartolomé Grella, located in the Villa Sarmiento neighborhood.

2. Golden Eras and Historic Campaigns

Patronato spent much of its history competing in regional tournaments of the Argentine interior, but the club always held moments of intense brilliance that paved its mystique.

The 1978 Epic: The First Shout in the National Tournament

In 1978, under the presidency of Fernando Pascual Gan, Patronato earned the right to compete in the prestigious National Tournament of the First Division after winning the Regional Tournament. It was the first time the club officially measured its strength against the giants of Buenos Aires football. The great milestone of this campaign occurred on November 26, 1978, when Patronato defeated the powerful Boca Juniors 2-1 at the Estadio Presbítero Grella, a feat that still echoes in the memory of the province's oldest fans.

The Return and the Climb to the Elite (2010–2015)

After decades moving through the Torneo Argentino B and A, the modern era of Patronato began to take shape in 2010. Under the technical command of Marcelo Fuentes, the club achieved promotion to the Primera B Nacional by defeating Santamarina de Tandil. Five years later, in December 2015, came the peak of their national ascent. Managed by Iván Delfino, the Rojinegro won a dramatic final on penalties against the same Santamarina, with goalkeeper and idol Sebastián Bértoli saving the decisive kick and converting his own. For the first time in the modern league format, Patronato was in the top division of Argentine football.

The 2022 Miracle: Copa Argentina Champions

No chapter in the club's history surpasses the year 2022. Living through the drama of imminent relegation due to the promedios table (the average points system that governs relegation in Argentina), the team led by Facundo Sava played attractive, competitive, and courageous football. Although they could not avoid relegation to the second division due to mathematical factors from previous seasons, the players wrote the most glorious page in the history of Entre Ríos football by winning the 2022 Copa Argentina.

The campaign was a true footballing fairy tale, in which Patronato successively eliminated the country's biggest clubs:

  • Quarter-finals: Elimination of River Plate on penalties, after a 2-2 draw.
  • Semi-final: Elimination of Boca Juniors on penalties, after a 1-1 draw.
  • Final: 1-0 victory over Talleres de Córdoba in Mendoza, with an anthological and folkloric goal by Tiago Banega, who finished with a sliding tackle and saw the ball loop over the opposing goalkeeper in an unbelievable way.

With this title, Patronato achieved the unprecedented right to compete in the 2023 Copa Libertadores as a second-division club, a feat extremely rare in the history of South American football.

The 2023 International Adventure

The participation in the 2023 Copa Libertadores was historic. The club could not host its first matches at the Estadio Grella due to CONMEBOL infrastructure requirements (especially regarding the pitch and lighting), having to play in Santa Fe. Even while playing in the local second division, Patronato defeated Melgar of Peru 4-1 and, in the final round of the group stage, achieved a historic triumph by defeating the giant Atlético Nacional 1-0 in Medellín, Colombia. This victory secured third place in the group and a spot in the Copa Sudamericana playoffs, where they were eventually eliminated by Botafogo, but left with their heads held high under the applause of the continent.

3. Context and Current Moment (2023–2024)

The year 2023 and the beginning of 2024 represented a harsh reality check for "El Patrón." The transition from playing elite international tournaments while facing the long trips and difficult pitches of the Primera Nacional took its physical and financial toll. The club suffered from squad fatigue and the loss of key players who were champions in 2022.

Currently, Patronato is undergoing a moment of deep internal restructuring. Under the management of the board led by Dante Molina, the club seeks to balance its accounts, invest heavily in youth categories, and modernize the structure of the Estadio Presbítero Bartolomé Grella. On the sporting front, after irregular campaigns in the second division under coaches like Walter Perazzo and Diego Pozo, the priority for the Paraná club is to stabilize the professional team to design a sustainable return to the Liga Profesional de Fútbol (First Division).

4. Main Idols and Iconic Coaches

  • Sebastián Bértoli: The greatest idol in the club's modern history. Goalkeeper, captain, and official penalty taker, Bértoli defended Patronato's goal for 16 years (2003-2019), playing over 500 matches. He led the team from the Torneo Argentino B to consolidation in the First Division, retiring as a living legend of Entre Ríos sport.
  • Walter Andrade: The sheriff of the defense. "El Negro" Andrade personified the grit and spirit of the club, playing in over 400 games during the promotion and survival campaigns in the elite.
  • Facundo Sava: The coach who architected the tactical glory of 2022. With his offensive style, resilient mentality, and ability to motivate a doubted group, Sava etched his name forever in the history of Paraná by winning the Copa Argentina.
  • Iván Delfino: The strategic coach who achieved the historic promotion to the elite in 2015, building one of the most defensively solid teams in the history of the Primera B Nacional.
  • Tiago Banega: Midfielder whose goal in the 2022 Copa Argentina final secured footballing eternity and the club's only elite national title.

5. Major Rivalries

Patronato has two historical rivalries of deep socio-cultural relevance in the province of Entre Ríos:

The Paranaense Derby: Patronato vs. Atlético Paraná

It is the oldest and most traditional derby in the provincial capital. The rivalry was born in the founding years of both institutions (Club Atlético Paraná was founded in 1907 and Patronato in 1914). Historically, the derby divided the city between neighborhoods and the worldviews of the two fanbases. While Patronato had strong ties to the Catholic Church and Grella's community work, Atlético Paraná was associated with the railway and secular sectors. The derby has lost frequency in recent years due to the disparity in divisions (with Patronato rising to the national level and Atlético Paraná remaining in regional leagues and the Torneo Federal), but the passion and tension remain intact when the teams face each other.

The Entre Ríos Derby: Patronato vs. Gimnasia y Esgrima (Concepción del Uruguay)

This rivalry represents the geopolitical dispute within the province of Entre Ríos itself. On one side, Patronato, representing the administrative capital (Paraná, on the banks of the Paraná River); on the other, Gimnasia y Esgrima de Concepción del Uruguay (located on the banks of the Uruguay River), historically a city of strong historical and cultural relevance in the interior of the state. The clashes in the 1990s and 2000s for the national promotion tournaments were marked by packed stadiums, heavy police presence, and an atmosphere of intense regional rivalry.
