The Chernobyl disaster, which occurred in April 1986, had a profound and lasting impact on the Soviet Union's (USSR) nuclear program and, subsequently, on Russia's energy production.
Changes in the Number of Nuclear Power Plants in the USSR
Following the Chernobyl accident, there was a significant shift in the policy and expansion of the Soviet nuclear sector. Before the disaster, the USSR had an ambitious plan for nuclear energy expansion, viewing it as a crucial solution to meet the country's growing energy demand and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. However, the magnitude of the disaster, its devastating effects on human health and the environment, and the enormous loss of public and international trust in the safety of Soviet nuclear power plants led to a drastic reassessment of these plans.
Several new nuclear power plant projects that were in the planning or construction phase were canceled or suspended. Nuclear energy production in Russia did not drastically decrease immediately after Chernobyl, as existing plants continued to operate. However, the growth rate of nuclear energy was significantly reduced compared to what would have been expected without the disaster.
Russia inherited a large part of the USSR's nuclear infrastructure, including operational power plants. Over the years, the country has invested in the modernization and safety of its existing nuclear power plants, seeking to regain public and international confidence. Nuclear energy continues to be a stable, low-carbon source of electricity for Russia, contributing to its energy security. However, public perception and the stringent safety regulations implemented after Chernobyl influenced the scale of new nuclear projects, resulting in a more moderate growth in nuclear capacity compared to pre-disaster expectations.
