
The final death toll may still increase in some municipalities in the most affected provinces, Iwate, Miyagi, and Fukushima, where thousands of people are still missing.
About 100,000 Japanese soldiers, supported by foreign volunteer rescue specialists, continue to search the devastated area for survivors under the rubble and those swept out to sea by a giant wave that reached 10 meters high.
The Japanese government announced this Tuesday that 25,000 people were rescued after the 8.9 magnitude earthquake, according to data from the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
More than 500,000 evacuated people are now living in 2,500 temporary shelters, many of which lack potable water and electricity.
