The newspapers report that 'Justice sentences Lindemberg Alves to 98 years and 10 months in prison', and some people on the street have asked me, "Why not apply a life sentence?"
The answer is simple,
In Brazil, there is no life sentence due to our Constitution.
Anyone sentenced to more than 30 years has their time 'rounded' to 30 years.
Art. 5 All are equal before the law, without distinction of any kind, guaranteeing to Brazilians and foreigners residing in the country the inviolability of the right to life, liberty, equality, security, and property, in the following terms:
XLVII - there shall be no punishments:
a) of death, except in case of declared war, under the terms of art. 84, XIX;
b) of a perpetual nature;
c) of forced labor;
d) of banishment;
e) cruel;
In the coming days, I will describe each of the punishments mentioned above,
