The word autopsy comes from a time when, due to religious dogma, it was forbidden to violate human bodies for study.
The first ones who dared to challenge this dogma discovered a new world, hence the etymology of this word,
The human being looking inside another human being; their fellow being, therefore the human being seeing themselves” In French autopsie.

Necropsy comes from the etymology (necro- + -opsy) [Greek nekrós, -ôu + (Greek ópsis, -eos, appearance, vision)]

Also synonyms are: necroscopy (necro- + -scopy), each with its own etymology, but equal meanings.
