Why Is There a Tolerable Dose of Radiation?

The existence of a "tolerable dose" of radiation is a fundamental concept in radiation protection and is based on the intrinsic ability of our body to repair cellular damage. At low levels, ionizing radiation can cause mutations and DNA damage, but cells have efficient repair mechanisms that, in most cases, can correct this damage before it becomes harmful.

The idea of "dose per day" or "dose per hour" refers to the rate at which a person is being exposed to radiation. Exposure to a total dose of, say, 10 mSv (millisieverts) spread over a year is much less harmful than the same dose of 10 mSv received at a single moment. This is because, when the dose is received over time, the body has more opportunities to repair cellular damage as it occurs.

At very low doses, the health risk is considered insignificant or very small. Dose limits established by regulatory bodies aim to ensure that public and worker exposure to radiation sources is kept at levels that minimize the risk of long-term adverse health effects, such as cancer.

It is important to note that there is no absolute "safe threshold" below which there is no risk. Most radiation risk models assume a linear no-threshold relationship, meaning that even the smallest dose of radiation can have a small increase in risk. However, these risks are proportional to the dose, and at low levels, they are considered acceptable compared to other everyday risks.

Tolerable dose values are established based on extensive scientific studies, which include observations of populations exposed to radiation (such as atomic bomb survivors and nuclear power plant workers) and research on animal models. These studies help determine the relationship between radiation dose and the probability of harmful health effects, allowing for the definition of limits that protect the population.
