The Andraus Building is located in São Paulo, in the Republic district, at the corner of Avenida São João and Rua Pedro Américo. It stands 115 meters tall with 32 floors, and its construction was completed in 1962. It became known for a fire that occurred on February 24, 1972, due to an electrical system overload, which fatally claimed 16 lives and left 320 injured.

The building was renovated, receiving various safety features. Others were included over the years, and today it is known for its safety. Several reports have visited the building, showcasing its safety and the receptiveness of its administrators, which contrasts with the Joelma Building, where another fire occurred less than two years later, and where visits and filming are prohibited.

About the fire.

The fire started with a short circuit in the advertising displays of the Casas Pirani store. The fire began at 4:20 PM and within 10 minutes had spread to other floors. A large operation was carried out to rescue people by helicopter.

The Andraus Building: An Architectural Landmark and Witness to a Devastating Fire

The Andraus Building, located in the heart of São Paulo, on Avenida São João, is one of the city's most emblematic and recognizable skyscrapers. Its history is marked by unique architecture and a tragic event that immortalized it in collective memory: the devastating fire of 1972. This essay aims to analyze the main relevant points that define the Andraus Building, from its architectural conception to the scars left by the fire, without, however, presenting invented information.

Distinct Conception and Architecture

Designed by renowned architects Jacques Pilon and Minas T. Chryssofolos, the Andraus Building was conceived during a period of urban effervescence and a search for modernity in São Paulo's architecture. Its construction, initiated in 1960, represented a milestone for the Avenida São João skyline, boasting straight lines and an imposing presence that stood out among other buildings. The Andraus' architecture is characterized by:

  • Structure and Facade: The reinforced concrete structure and the reflective glass facade gave the building a modern and futuristic look for its time. The design aimed to optimize natural lighting and provide panoramic city views.
  • Mixed Functionality: Originally, the project encompassed a variety of uses, housing offices, residential apartments, and, on its lower floors, a large shopping center, making it a microcosm of urban life.
  • Strategic Location: Its privileged position on Avenida São João, one of São Paulo's most important arteries, contributed significantly to its visibility and integration with the surrounding urban fabric.

The 1972 Fire: A Trauma in São Paulo's Memory

The night of February 27, 1972, is unforgettable in the history of the Andraus Building and the city of São Paulo. A fire of catastrophic proportions quickly spread through the building, claiming the lives of 17 people and causing extensive damage. The circumstances of the fire's origin and its rapid spread were the subject of intense investigations and discussions, exposing fragilities in safety regulations and oversight at the time. The main aspects of this event include:

  • The Origin of the Fire: Although various theories were considered, the official cause pointed to a short circuit in a store on the ground floor. The flammable nature of the materials used at the time and the lack of adequate firefighting systems contributed to the severity of the incident.
  • The Spread of the Flames: The building's verticality and the rapid ascent of the fire were exacerbated by the lack of adequate compartmentalization and the absence of efficient escape routes for all floors. Natural ventilation, which under normal conditions was an architectural advantage, became a channel for the spread of fire and smoke.
  • Despair and the Fight for Survival: Accounts from eyewitnesses and rescue teams describe scenes of despair, with people trapped in their apartments and offices, seeking refuge on balconies and rooftops. The firefighters' actions were heroic, but the limitations of resources and the extent of the fire presented monumental challenges.
  • Social Impact and Legislation: The Andraus fire had a profound impact on São Paulo's society, generating commotion and indignation. Consequently, the event served as a catalyst for the review and improvement of fire safety laws and regulations in Brazil, influencing construction and inspection across the country.

Legacy and Reconstruction

Despite the tragedy, the Andraus Building was not demolished. After a long period of damage assessment and structural and safety renovations, the building was rehabilitated and resumed commercial and residential activities. Its silhouette, marked by the scars of the fire and the modifications made to adapt it to new safety requirements, continues to be a reference point in São Paulo's urban landscape. The Andraus Building remains a testament to a dark chapter in the city's history, but also a symbol of resilience and the importance of safety in modern architecture.
