The Simon family was hosting Scout Leader Juan, 36, at their home. The evening went by naturally, although anxiety was evident. Marco Aurélio and his brother, Marco Antônio, were discussing music.

Seu Ivo states that, during the dinner conversation, he reiterated several times that Juan should climb Pico dos Marins with a local guide.
"Juan, go with the guide, don't go without guides. Accidents don't happen, they are caused. If you are careful, accidents don't happen," Seu Ivo told Chief Juan at that day's dinner.
Juan slept on the living room sofa, and the children slept in the bedroom.
