Years go by, and the understanding of diversity improves. During my internship at Escola Evangélica Príncipe da Paz, I encountered the reality of atypical children, especially those with dyslexia and ADHD.
Neuroatypical individuals see the world differently. For a neurotypical reader, a justified text can show some imperfections when the screen doesn't accommodate all the words; when breaking the line, exaggerated spaces form between them — this is the known "gap-toothed effect" in text.
The fact is that, for a neuroatypical person, these alignment flaws are like rivers flowing down the text, causing them to get lost in their reading.
Another important point is that left alignment provides a safe starting point for reading, which is taught to atypical children. This study didn't start now.
But then, why did the silviolobo.com.br project take so long to adopt this stance?
What happens is that this project has always aimed to be a kind of online book, where internet users could publish their texts and read the available content. And, after all, what is the gold standard for books? That's right: justified alignment.
To compensate for this, for a long time, I used robust scripts that subtly adjusted the spacing between each character, so that the alteration wouldn't be clearly noticeable and would provide an adequate response. We still have, in the bottom left corner of all pages, an accessibility icon with the "Reading Guide" function, where the reader can activate the tool to trace the line they are reading — exactly as a neuroatypical person does when reading books.
But, as time passed and with reflection, I understood that, although accessibility tools are useful, the ideal is for accessibility to already exist and not need to be activated.
Thus, from today onwards, articles will no longer have justified alignment. I have made several batch modifications so that the entire site adjusts, but they are not absolute modifications. I noticed that titles, warning screens, and notes, as well as some paragraphs, are still not free from justified alignment. This will be corrected over time.
I hope to have taken another step towards inclusion and will always be open to receiving suggestions, guidance, criticisms, and compliments.
