Suzanne Dodd, project manager for Voyager (from 2010 to date), stated that the likely location of the problem is in the FDS memory. One bit corrupted it. It's amazing that it lasted this long.
The small team still working on Voyager 1 is not willing to give up. One alternative is to send commands that will restart protocols from the time it was passing through the large gas planets and hope that a known error is identified, and that it can be circumvented in some way.
Today, a signal traveling at the speed of light takes 45 hours to reach the spacecraft. The project's main scientists are no longer at NASA, nor among us.
The responsible manager confides that, although the hope of reestablishing part of the telemetry is not entirely lost, it would be a miracle. Another concern is that, by bypassing this problem, another one might arise.
