1 - Cars didn't have seatbelts, headrests, or airbags!!
2 – We'd be loose in the back seat having a blast! And it wasn't dangerous!
3 - Cribs and toys were multi-colored and at least painted with "dubious" paints containing lead or some other poison.
4 - There were no safety locks on car doors, cabinets for medications, detergents, or household chemicals.
5 – We rode our bikes everywhere, without helmets, knee pads, shin guards, and elbow pads...
6 - We drank tap water, from a hose, or from a fountain and not mineral water in so-called... ¨sterilized¨... bottles...
7.- We built those famous soapbox derby cars and those lucky enough to live near an asphalt slope could try to set speed records and even discover halfway that they had "saved" their shoe soles, which were used as brakes... And we were barefoot...
8 - We'd go play in the street,
9 - We had morning classes only,
10 - Casts, broken teeth, scraped knees...
Did anyone complain about this?
11 - We ate candy freely,
Bread with butter,
drinks with (dangerous) sugar. There was no talk of obesity -
we always played outside and were super active...
12 - We'd share a soda with our friends, bought at the corner store, sip by sip, and no one ever died from it....
13 - No Playstations, Nintendo 64,
Xboxes, Video games,
Satellite internet,
DVDs, Dolby surround, camera phones
Computers or Internet Chats
... Just friends.
14 - And our dogs? Remember?
No dog food. They ate the same food as us (often leftovers), and with no problem whatsoever!
Hot baths? Shampoo?
No way! In the backyard, one held the dog and the other with the (cold) hose would pour water and rub it with (believe it or not) laundry soap (bar)!
Did any dog die (or get sick) because of this??
15 - On foot or by bicycle, we'd go to our friends' houses, even if they lived miles away, we'd go in without knocking and play.
16 - That's right! Outside, in that gray and unsafe world! How was it possible? We played soccer in the street, with the goal marked by two stones, and even if we weren't picked... no one was frustrated, and it wasn't the "END OF THE WORLD"!
17 – At school, there were good and bad students. Some passed and others failed. No one went to a psychologist or psychotherapist for that. There was no "fad" of "gifted" children, nor was there talk of dyslexia, concentration problems, hyperactivity. Those who didn't pass simply repeated the year and tried again the following year!
18 - We had: Freedom, Failures, Successes, Responsibilities
...and we learned to deal with each of them!
The only real question is: how did we manage to survive???
And above all, how did we develop our personality?
