 II

Without major news, the days passed until the award ceremony for the new writers,

Maria and the doctor's relationship was already quite known. Alex cried alone in his room for a few days but composed himself for the event. He rented formal clothes and called Leonardo, asking his friend to accompany him. The friend was proud and couldn't help but call Maria, trying to show the young woman the importance of the event. The young woman, showing true admiration, promised to attend.

On the night of the event, Alex, Léo, and the couples Sílvio and Caroline; Maria and the doctor were present.

The night began in grand style with an enthusiastic speech by Miguel Jorge, describing the literary standing of Goian works and their impact on the national market.

Everyone sat very close to the stage. In the third row were Alex, Leonardo, Maria and the doctor, and right behind them Caroline, Sílvio and Eric. Everyone remained apprehensive about the results, expecting someone there to become famous.

When the moment arrived, a lady with a vibrant smile stepped forward among the guests present on the stage and began announcing the winners:

“— In third place, a fantastic work that tells the saga of a young industrialist fighting to succeed in life...”

Sílvio sighed with relief, knowing he wasn't third.

“— 'O grande homem' (The Great Man), written by Alberto Silva, is the third place winner!” the lady said, almost shouting.

There were applause and a rush as the writer, appearing to be around fifty years old, went up to the stage.

Greetings, hugs, and a few minutes passed until the lady continued:

“— In second place, a sublime work that tells the adventures of a boy who, upon arriving in a city, experiences a great and unexpected adventure...”

Sílvio straightened up in his chair, expecting to be called.

“— 'Os Lobos' (The Wolves), written by Célio Souza, is the second place winner!”

There was more applause, another rush, while Sílvio grew sad. The time between the announcement of the second and first place winners extended quite a bit, leaving the friends increasingly tense.

“— Now for the most anticipated moment. In first place, a unique work, by an immortal young man living a great passion.”

“— It's my friend!” exclaimed Sílvio.

“— 'O amor é imortal' (Love is Immortal), written by José Finotti, is the grand champion!”
