Pico dos Marins is a mountain located in the Serra da Mantiqueira, in the State of São Paulo. It stands at 2,420.7 meters above sea level, according to information from the Statistical Yearbook of Brazil - 2014, which can be downloaded in full at this link. Interestingly, many old publications listed this point as the highest in the state, but with the use of geolocation devices, it is now possible to confirm that Pedra Mina, on the border with Minas Gerais, is the highest peak in the State of São Paulo, with 2,798 m. I believe it is important to record this fact, as some accounts from that time mention Pico dos Marins as the highest, but today we know it is the third highest, with Pico dos Três Estados being the second, at 2,665 m.
Regardless, Pico dos Marins is a challenging climb, having even caused the death of experienced mountaineers due to adverse weather conditions.
"Body of French man missing on Pico dos Marins found. Eric Welterlin, 54, disappeared on April 16 during a running training session. The preliminary hypothesis is that he died of hypothermia. The search for the Frenchman, who lived in Itajubá (MG), mobilized nearly 100 people, including firefighters, a specialized police search group, and volunteers. In addition to the uneven terrain, another difficulty faced by the search groups was the constant presence of fog in some sections.
