Destruction in the Mountain Region of Rio de Janeiro

The rains in the Mountain Region of Rio de Janeiro have killed a total of 245 people since Tuesday, December 11, 2010.

In Teresópolis, the hardest-hit city, 130 people died. In Nova Friburgo, 97 people died. In Petrópolis, there were 18 deaths.

As the period of most intense rainfall ended, 847 deaths were accounted for in the State of Rio de Janeiro. Unfortunately, experience shows that deaths from opportunistic diseases continue to occur even after the rains subside.
