07/08/2011 - (Name withheld), 23, who was shocked at the Ferroviário power substation on Wednesday night (6th), remains in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Burn Hospital. (Name withheld) has between 70% and 80% of his body burned and is on life support. The circuit caused by the man tripped the station and two others: Aeroporto and Campinas. Approximately 120,000 consumer units – corresponding to one-third of Goiânia – in 80 neighborhoods of the capital, were left without electricity. The southwest and central regions of Goiânia were affected.

To enter the station, the man, who lives in the area, jumped over the fence. The security guards, who protect the site 24 hours a day, took him to the guardhouse, but the individual ran into the high-voltage equipment. The guards reported that (Name withheld) was shaken and claimed he entered the premises to pray, because the world was ending. There is unofficial information that he suffers from psychiatric problems.

(Name withheld) touched a disconnecting switch – a device used to isolate another component of the substation – and was electrocuted. "He was repelled by one of the equipment on the incoming line," explains the engineer and superintendent of Celg Operations, João de Oliveira Júnior. Celg technicians waited for an Fire Department vehicle to attend to the young man before the power was restored. After 30 minutes, some of the neighborhoods had power back, and in another 20 minutes, the rest did too.

The Ferroviário substation is one of 15 substations in Goiânia and is considered medium-sized. The voltage of the power distribution unit is 138,000 volts. According to the Celg Operations superintendent, the current received by the man was approximately 100 amperes. "The human body can withstand a current of 9 milliamperes. The current he received was over 100,000 times higher."

This was the first case of an intrusion into a Celg unit for this purpose. João de Oliveira explains that, normally, when a third party enters the unit, it is for theft of office supplies or even wires. The substation is fully fenced and has signs indicating the danger of the location, as well as 24-hour security and a closed-circuit TV system.

The engineer believes it is a miracle that the victim survived the shock. (Name withheld)'s family declined to speak with the press and did not allow the hospital to release further information about the victim's clinical condition. The hospital only confirmed that the condition remained critical until midnight yesterday. (Cejane Pupulin from Jornal Hoje, link: O HOJE)

07/07/2011, night - Condition of (Name withheld), who caused the blackout, is critical.

Yesterday, the following neighborhoods in the capital of Goiânia were completely in the dark: Norte Ferroviário, Criméia Oeste, Criméia Leste, Marechal Rondon, Fama, Centro Oeste, and part of the city center (One in five consumer units in the capital lost power).

This happened because a man, apparently with mental problems, invaded the Norte Ferroviário electrical station and climbed onto one of the towers.

The man was severely burned due to the electric shock; this morning's newspapers report that at least 70% of his body was burned.

At the scene during the incident, many people speculated about the causes. The number of police vehicles that arrived led many to believe the man was fleeing the police when he entered the premises and suffered the electric shock.

Observing more carefully, some noticed something very strange about the location he was in, and stated it was suicide.

The victim's health condition, who was taken to the Burn Hospital, is still unknown.

(Name withheld), 23, remains in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the [[Goiânia Burn Hospital]]. He suffered burns to over 70% of his body after invading the [[Celg power substation]] on Avenida Goiás Norte on Wednesday night (6th). (Name withheld) suffers from psychiatric problems, according to information from the Fire Department, and allegedly climbed onto the structure of one of the transformers at the electrical power supply station, where he was electrocuted.
The victim's actions caused a power distribution network failure and resulted in a blackout for 120,000 consumer units, including commercial establishments and residences. (Name withheld) was subjected to a shock with a power exceeding 138,000 volts, according to Celg. The hospital reported that the victim is on life support.
According to Celg's Superintendent of Operations, electrical engineer João de Oliveira Júnior, the situation at the other substations was normalized within half an hour. Due to the incident at the Ferroviário Substation, the delay in returning to normal was longer. "We waited for Samu and the Fire Department to arrive, so we could remove the young man and certify that the area was safe to reactivate the substation and normalize the power supply," he stated.
According to Celg's press officer, Herivelto Nunes, the location has 24-hour surveillance, and on Wednesday night, a guard was present when the young man, who appeared psychologically disturbed, jumped over the approximately 1.80m wall. "He was not in his right state of mind, perhaps he had psychiatric problems or was under the influence of drugs. He said he was evangelical and had come to pray because the world was going to end the next day," he said.
According to Herivelto, the guard called another guard, who was in the Celg Human Resources department building next door, to help contain the young man. He stated that the two tried to convince Giomar to leave and even escorted him to the gate, but he fled and climbed onto one of the concrete structures supporting the substation's disconnecting switches.
João de Oliveira explained that the disconnecting switches receive power lines that arrive at the station and require a minimum isolation distance of one meter to distribute electricity. When Giomar brought his hand close to the device, the insulation was broken, and the protection system caused a short circuit to protect the equipment. "He didn't actually touch the device, but by getting close to such a strong current, he was hit by a charge that would be almost a thousand times that of a shock from a common outlet. If he had touched the device, he would not have survived," he said.
The engineer states that when one comes into contact with such a charge, each body reacts differently, but second and third-degree burns, as well as blood vessel rupture and heart fibrillation, always occur. "It is rare for a person who gets close to this type of current to survive."
Celg states that such incidents have never occurred before, as people generally keep their distance from the site. However, they have a project to build reinforced walls with concertina wire – a type of more rigid barbed wire – to keep people further away from the substation. Celg regretted the incident and affirms that the location is fenced, has surveillance, and signs indicating the dangers of approaching the equipment, but that in this case, the young man's psychological state led him to ignore the safety warnings.
