The Ark of the Covenant, which housed the tablets of the Ten Commandments, was carried by the Hebrew people and had the Temple of Solomon in Jerusalem as its first permanent location, having been destroyed by the Babylonian army [Nebuchadnezzar II.
From this point on, the whereabouts of the artifact are not recorded. It is more natural to think that it was looted and/or destroyed, since not only the temple but all of Jerusalem was sacked.
There are many legends and unconfirmed historical claims that state that before the fall of Jerusalem, the ark was removed and hidden.
There is a legend that it was hidden in Ethiopia. Another claim, built on faith, is that God himself hid it and will keep it hidden until the arrival of a new messiah.
