Internaut: why in the future of the present indicative mood in the 3rd person plural the ending is 'rão'?
( ESTUDARÃO - they will study) since in the pluperfect tense in the same position it is 'ram'?
( ESTUDARAM - they studied)
Please help me.
Answer
Regarding the doubt, it is worth remembering that in verbs, we use
-ão in a stressed syllable: estarão (they will be)
-am in an unstressed syllable: estavam (they were)
in the remaining word classes (nouns, adjectives, etc.) we always use
-ão. Example: irmão (brother), canção (song), lição (lesson).
The spelling -am is only used in unstressed syllables of verb forms.
The justifications for this usage are in the pronunciation; it's the same as the rule that before 'P' and 'B' only 'M' is used. All of this comes from a phonetic relationship.
But if you're looking for a tip, use -ão for the future. Past (preterite) and present use -am.
Hope this helps, best regards!
