I learned about the Marco Aurélio Case on the internet, like many. Curiosity made me search several sources, and in an unusual way I found that each one who tells the story presents a new point, a detail, something that was told by one of the Scouts in one interview, was not told in another, and whenever I heard or read something, that little animal would come and say, "look there, now he presented something different", for my personal satisfaction I decided to organize the story on my website, so I can indicate the origin of each statement, thus building the complete story, or closer to what has already been told.
It is a known fact that the Marco Aurélio Case had the searches closed and some time later the investigations ceased, and consequent filing of the case on April 08, 1990, already on March 10, 2005 the records were unfiled for study conducted by Rodrigo Nunes, who from his work emerged three works, Operation Marins: The disappearance of the scout Marco Aurélio, Operation Marins 2 New discoveries, and Operation Marins: disappearance of the scout Marco Aurélio: 30 years of mystery, being a junction of the first two works.
The books were extremely important in preserving history, especially among mountaineering enthusiasts.

Images from the first two editions of the book by Journalist Rodrigo Nunes:

There are criticisms that Rodrigo Nunes romanticized the story too much. I contend that the books made the case palatable. If it weren't for these books there wouldn't be so many enthusiasts of the case. For no one could bear to deal with this matter in a cold and objective manner for more than 30 years, they would have been sick after a few months as happened after the search stopped. It is the books, and the legends told at the foot of the mountain that perpetuate the case. Newspaper headlines are immediate, and they're always looking for something new to show.
Simon family narrated by Mr. Ivo, his Ivo.
A great source of information about the Simon family is in the video Everything passes? Wounded Healer Channel [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMoIDYo8XXk]. In Portuguese.

Anyone who hears the name Ivo Bosaja Simon and knows how this citizen moved heaven and earth in search of his son, would think of an arrogant high-class fellow with many influential contacts, but Mr. Ivo, or better known Seu Ivo is the post of all this. He is a man of humble manners and gestures, captivating by his simple way of talking about his family, his great passion.
It is difficult to analyze the case of Marco Aurélio, without being enchanted by Seu Ivo. Who, as he says, was born in a difficult time, the beginning of the Second World War, the son of an alcoholic father, which pains him to remember, but at the same time, his father was a 'wonderful' person, who encourages him to read and culture. His mother was from an Italian family, a statement he makes to reinforce the importance of family. (Remember reader, as Italians are celebrated icons of the appreciation of the family, we remember here from the simplicity of the Italian couple who build their own world around a family nucleus of mother, father and children; to the mafia movies that are built on the great father or godfather, [The Godfather]).
Seu Ivo says that when he met his wife, Tereza Neuma Bezerra, at the Young Men's Christian Association, she refused to marry him, because she could not have children, but he promised her that they would not be able to adopt,
Even with the difficulty of having children, due to "health problems" the couple conceived 05 children. The first child was a girl, "Adriana, 8 months, a little cyanotic, but no problem", after 2 years is born "Fabio, blonde, looked like baby johnson, beautiful", "had problems in the intestine". He had to operate, because Fabio did not evacuate, 80 cm of intestine was removed. The third and fourth children were twins, "three months of incubator, the first bottle was a drop of milk in the mouth with the dropper." The twins after 03 three months went home, had a lot of difficulty walking, "had a little bit of sequelae".
Marco Aurélio had a bit of a strabismus, he didn't look from the front, he looked sideways. At this time, his Ivo says that he stayed with the girl and three children between life and death. "Taking them for a walk, not knowing if they would be with us the next day." When the children were older, Patricia was born.
Seu Ivo makes it clear how happy, despite the difficulties, they were, and fulfilled with each victory of the children, "the twins played football, they were always the last, but they were never segregated in school. Fabio also played football in a wonderful way."
Who is Marco Aurélio and the interest in Scouting.

It was thanks to a doctor and friend of Mrs. Neuma, that the children met Scouting, which by the conduct of discipline, organization enchanted all the children, who began to participate. Even his Ivo became Head of a group of pioneers. [Just doing one thing, the Scouts are organized by branches, being Wolf Branch from 6 to 10 years old, Scout branch from 11 to 14 years old, senior branch from 15 to 17 years old, pioneer branch from 18 to 21 years old, and above and 21 there is still the presence of volunteers.

The Peak of the Marins.

The Pico dos Marins is a mountain located in the Serra da Mantiqueira, in the State of São Paulo, it has 2,420.7 m and height counting from sea level, information collected in the Statistical Yearbook of Brazil - 2014, which can be downloaded in full at this link. The following photo was obtained from Wikipedia under CC BY-SA 3.0 license. Location: DMS: 22° 30′ 9" S, 45° 7′ 16" W Decimal: -22.5025, -45.121111 Before out of curiosity we tell that, many old publications placed this point as the highest in the state, but with the use of Geolocation devices it is possible today to say that the Pedra Mina, on the border with Minas Gerais is the highest peak of the State of São Paulo, with 2,798 m. I believe it is important to record this fact, since, some testimonies of the time speak of the Peak of the Marins as the highest, but today we know that it is the third, the second being the Peak of the Three States, 2,665 m.
In any case, Pico os Marins is challenging, having already caused the death of even experienced mountaineers due to the adverse weather conditions.
"Body of missing Frenchman at Pico dos Marins is found. Eric Welterlin, 54, went missing on April 16 during a running practice. Preliminary hypothesis considers that he died of hypothermia. The search for the Frenchman, who lived in Itajubá (MG), mobilized almost 100 people among firefighters, specialized search group in the forest of the police and volunteers. In addition to the uneven terrain, another difficulty faced by the search parties was the constant presence of fog in some stretches. The scan was suspended after 17 days." - By G1 Vale do Paraíba and Region
Without a doubt it is a beautiful place.

Preparations for the expedition to the Marins.
It is consensus in all narratives that the trip to the Marins was planned well in advance. According to Ivo, in the testimony presented in the previous video, originally a total of 17 (seventeen) people would go to Pico do Marins (According to Seu Ivo). It was a proof of scouting, it turns out that days before several people were giving up the trip, including Mr. Ivo, for commitments related to his work, can not go.
About the preparations for the trip, says Chief Juan Bernabeu, now a fellow lawyer, who lives in Manaus, narrates that:
I find things interesting the way they happened. These activities began in 1984, a leading activity. The head of the place of the event made an invitation for the Olivetanos to go camping there. The invitation was made, and gradually they exchanged contact, by correspondence, and in March and 85 new contact was made again, for every year they have chieftaincy meetings, and the chief there () again challenged that the Olivetanos, in the person of their chief go camping at Pico dos Marins. Within the activities of the Scouts, there should be a challenge, at least once a year, doing something difficult, something that requires everything they know, would be an excellent challenge, to demonstrate all the skills. As it was a challenge made a year before, I expected (Chief Juan) that it would be the whole group (scouts, wolves, bandeirantes), approximately 100 people.
The transcription made here is not sic erat scriptum, that is, it is not an identical copy of the sayings. The adaptation of the spoken modality to the writing required adaptations. But it is interesting to describe such testimonies made, because as it was counted by his Ivo the number of people who would be and 17, already Chief Juan tells in more detail and says that this number was approximately 100 (one hundred) people.
Of course, only the seniors would rise to the peak. But something that never happened happened, there were only 04 seniors left, until the boss Valdir, who was the head of the senior gave up., but as I () had made the commitment, I assumed, even Mr. Ivo should go, and only gave up the day before, until their groceries, for him, were bought. Everybody was going, and suddenly everything was withered.

São Paulo - SP, June 05, 1985, Wednesday, eve of holiday.

Sunrise (local) 6:34. Sunset (local) 17:23 PM. Noon Solar 11:58.
The Simon family welcomed Scout Chief Juan [36 years old] home.
The night went naturally, although anxiety, Marco Aurélio and his brother Mark Antony, talked about music.
"Marco Aurélio was very excited, because it was the first time he would leave without his brothers. His Ivo believes that even though he did not complain about certain 'limitations', Marco Aurélio knew the deficiency he had in relation to vision, he was stoic, he saw 5% of one eye and 40% of the other, and doing this mission to the Peak of the Marins was also a personal victory, it was Pure Overcoming!
Seu Ivo states that already in the conversation at dinner, he reiterated a few times that Juan should climb the Pico dos Marins in the company of a local guide.
Juan, climb with the guide, don't go up without guides. Accidents don't happen, they are caused. If you're careful, accidents don't happen," his Ivo told Chief Juan at dinner this day.
Juan slept on the couch in the living room, the kids in the bedroom.
It ended on Wednesday, the eve of the holiday.
São Paulo (Tatuapé) - SP, June 06, 1985, Thursday, Corpus Christis.

I took them to the subway of Tatuapé, there the parents took Osvaldo, Ricardo and Ramatis, from there they found and from there to the Santana Terminal.
That was the last time his Ivo saw his son, and gave him a hug.
His Ivo at this time sensed that his son would no longer come, [Moving testimony present in the postcast [*11]
At 07:00, Chief Juan Bernabeu Céspedes, Osvaldo Lobeiro, Ricardo Salvione, Ramatis Rohm. board at the bus station on a Cometa bus bound for Lorena - SP. [*12].

As with Scout missions, they held a secret ballot to decide who would be the monitor on that provisional patrol. Once the votes were opened, two votes were for Richard, one vote was blank, and one was illegible. Marco Aurélio then said that he would have voted for him, and narrates several sources that the teenager was unhappy with the result of the vote.
I did not find in any document, podcast or video on youtube any explanation of the handwriting of Marco Aurélio being bad to the point of having made the reading of his vote illegible, or if he wrote illegible because he was on a bus, and for writing without having a support the letter was like this. We don't know.
Later, we will know that this episode, of the vote, was the only one described by Chief Juan, as a moment when Marco Aurélio was unhappy with something on the trip.
09:00 The teenagers and the Chief arrive in Lorena - SP, in the Paraíba valley, from there they go to Piquete - SP, and there they are received by Chief Paulinho, (chief scout of the Puris group).

Note: The original of this old photo of Piquete-SP was marketed on the Internet. Unfortunately the announcement was paused, and we could not get more information.
Chief Paulinho took the young people and Chief Juan to the Refugio dos Marins, which at the time was the home of Seu Afonso, at which time the young people were introduced, and Juan to the local resident.
Juan narrates this moment with more elements. [*13. LIVE - CHIEF JUAN BERNABEU, from the UFO Connection Program]
Chief Juan gives details about his meeting with Chief Carlinho, and makes it very evident his displeasure with a lot of things, mainly, because. He said he believed that the mission of ascent to Pico dos Marins would be a joint work with local scouts, picketing, but when he got there he was only left at Mr. Afonso's house.
The chief Juan, in the live mentioned here, also says to feel at the time very dissatisfied, because when he arrived at the house of his Afonso, around noon, the resident would have looked suspicious at him, for being a strange person, so Chief Carlinhos said that they were good people, but then left leaving there the chief and the boys.
Mr. Afonso was the owner of the house, the Base, today known as Refugio dos Marins, many truths and many myths were born in that place.

This photo is available in several newspapers, and belongs to the family's personal archive. We treat the photo through artificial intelligence.
On the day of arrival, several activities were carried out.
- a ravine has been dug to make a fire,
- made the first food,
- were bathing in a river (extremely cold)
- Some food was put in water. Anyone who has ever left a margarine on the table, knows that it turns into a yellowish liquid, so it is common that in camp, put the container of margarine inside a pot, and also put water to keep the product fresh.
Something extremely relevant, which is narrated by Ricardo [11], is that the scouts and the chief were not prepared for the cold of that place, even they were not prepared with the amount of clothes.
Because of the cold, the chores of washing the dishes for dinner were left for the next day [11]
They went to sleep.
Marins Base, Piquete-SP, June 07, 1985, Friday.

The Sun rose that day at 6:35, Sunset (local) 17:23, Solar noon 11:59
When they woke up that day, they noticed a lot of things out of place.
According to the Scouts' report read in [11], Chief Juan was the first to leave the tent. Richard noticed that his plastic bag boots were not where he left them. The can of oil that was near the tent was far away, and empty, and no trace of the liquid was found. Also missing were the lids of the lunch boxes of Juan and Marco Aurélio, also disappeared eggs.
In the postcast [11] it is said that the fact that they 'messed with things' would give in the future great discussions. With all due respect, I completely disagree!
I, humbly, from what I saw reading the books of Rodrigo Nunes, by several testimonies of all the scouts and Juan, it seems that the explanation of the dog is silly, only excuses.
It is a fact that they were not alone there, and it was not a dog. Alfonso's family was a constant presence, and he had children as well. It is all the time narrated that other people would go to Pico and pass by them.
Osvaldo Lobeiro in a live for the UFO Connection Program [14. LIVE - SCOUT OSVALDO MACHADO] states categorically that one of the memories that still bothers him is the feeling that they were not alone there.
Marco Aurélio washed the dishes on this day, and suffered harshly from the cold, his hands get hard, he tries to wrap himself in newspapers and cloths, Ramatis lends gloves, Osvaldo Jornals, Ricardo massages his hands,
Chief Juan teaches them exercises to warm up, but they only really heat up when they make fire.
On Friday there was walking, bathing in the river, Segundo [11] the food was noodles with sardines for lunch.
Also according to [11], the group of the Puris of Piquete-SP, would have told Juan that he should go up with Mr. Afonso. [Already this point, is much discussed].
Juan [13], 35 years later, still downplays the fact that he did not call the guide. In live Juan said that he talked to his Afonso, and that he had said that it was just to take the road, passed some instructions, and 'fart' would arrive in Pico. [That fart is mine].
In the records, Juan said that Afonso was busy and could not go up, in the same records, Afonso says that he was available, but that Juan preferred to go up alone.
On Friday, among other subjects, the young people talked about the structure of the pyramids and flying saucers in Campos do Jordão.
The night food of this day was noodles with sausage and vegetables [11].
On this day the Fire of Council takes place. At that moment new elections were held and this time Marco Aurélio was chosen.
Much is said about Marco Aurélio' ability to be the monitor. Today, everyone states categorically that he was the most qualified to be the monitor. But the doubts remain. If the criterion of the choice of the monitor is the qualification, why of a democratic choice? And why take another vote? Or if the choice was for the most qualified, wouldn't it be the case that the boss would choose the boy right away? It seems that in the end they gave a little way. It was clear from what happened in the vote during the trip that the monitoring meant a lot to Marco Aurélio, so friends supported him. It was the politics of friendship.
The Fire of Counsel ended, with each one saying a personal prayer, and they went to bed at 21:00 p.m.
Marins Base, Piquete-SP, June 08, 1985, Saturday,

The Sun rose at 6:35, Sunset (local) 17:23, Solar noon 11:59. At 18:00 this day the Moon was Waning Convex 66%, in Piquete - SP it rose at 23:48 to 100° and set at 12:05 to 257°.
Day of the attack on the summit.
Several expressions are used to indicate the final journey to the summit, the most common term is attack. This in turn can happen through a walk (trekking), a tepra stone, when the person needs to use the hands and feet, and the climb itself, with the use of equipment, such as ropes.
They wake up at 06:00 a.m.
Even in 1985, it is known that the Pico dos Marins is quite frequented. I am very surprised by the resistance to stating categorically that there were many people there that weekend. Many say, "I felt we weren't alone."
But they weren't alone!!
This Saturday, shortly after waking up at 06 a.m., a group passed that they were going to climb to Pico dos Marins, including this group of offers to climb together from the Boy Scouts. - The first group was a family from the region.
- Then a group of 15 to 20 people coming from Lorena - SP.
Chief Juan denies both invitations. According to the report, Juan claims that it was still early and that they would leave later at 9 o'clock [11].
Let's get it right here, once and for all, the trail that day had people!
It was 9 a.m. (approximately) when the group of Juan, Marco Aurélio, Ricardo and Ramatis left carrying a single backpack with canned goods and a pot.
Already on the way out, they take a wrong path! They were late arriving at Morro do Careca. They arrived on the hill tired, for they had taken the wrong path.
Most sources say that they simply missed the path, but 35 years later, in a live interview [13], Juan says that he had an exit on the road, and that distracted people passed through this "exit" without seeing.
I sincerely apologize, but I have a great responsibility to be truthful. And let's talk a little about the beginning of this journey, for that see the following photo:

In the red circle we have the Marins Base (Today called Refugio dos Marins), the site of the Boy Scouts camp, the blue circle is the Bald Hill, the orange path is the expected path. That red arrow up there points to the road used by the Boy Scouts!
Let's be honest. There was no way this journey could work. It was a dangerous and irresponsible choice to undertake a journey through a place not known without even knowing the direction it was going. The ending would be somewhat tragic.
When the chief and the scouts arrived at Morro do Careca they were tired. It was already a great time to own up to the mistake and return to São Paulo. The cold was deadly, they were not dressed properly and did not have the necessary provisions.
At this time, they arrived at an armed tent near a clearing. [11] In 1985 and today, this site is heavily used by campsites. According to the boys, now men, there was no one there. More evidence that there were more people there. As I said, there were the groups that passed through the Refuge and tents that showed that there were more.
Another point recorded in several testimonials, live and podcast, is that already at this moment young people began to present a clear difference in their physical fitness. Marco Aurélio at this time was left behind. Richard [11] tells us that Marco Aurélio at one point, when he was left behind, he was confused to the point that in the doubt of not knowing which direction he was taking, he was late behind.
So the most reliable explanation is that Marco Aurélio will be left behind because he is confused about the way.
Let's be rational. We're not here to blame this or that. The fact is, it wasn't a journey to Pico dos Marins, as they didn't know where Pico would be, nor was it a journey of exploration, as they didn't work on maps, coordinates, or directions. In short, they wandered believing they were in the right direction, almost moved by faith.
I'm sure young Chief Juan would never venture into a venture believing he would lose any of the teenagers. I see no malice in the decisions, just irresponsibility of a young man, although the consequences would reverberate in the lives of many people.
In college I had a wise old professor who said that Europeans do not lower the crest for anything, and jokes aside, imagine you, if today, almost 40 years after the facts, Juan, as seen in the live for the Ufo Connection, was not able to lower his head and say "I made a mistake". Are we going to expect him to do that when he was 36?
I personally prefer to call Juan and the teens survivors!
Fortunately, and even ironic that, the same messy boss who put him, is the scouts (Ramatis, Osvaldo, Ricardo and Marco) in danger of dying of hypothermia in Mantiqueira, was the same one who managed to save himself and three other teenagers by encouraging them to keep moving.
In Law we have some expressions that can bother people from other areas, terms such as "ignorance, incompetence".
In summary of all the testimonies and documents of the case, it clearly shows that the young chief was not prepared for that mission. He ignored the difficulties (note that not even the clothes necessary for the journey were taken, they went through intense cold), ignored the way, did not know how to use the compass.
The use of the compass is something interesting in this case. They claimed that the instrument was not good. Now, a compass is not Google Maps, its function is only to point the North. To use it it is necessary to have knowledge of fixed points, which can be a mountain or a star. From a point A, if it is possible to see point B, we can direct a line in degrees, pointing the destination by the line of aiming. In no video or testimony did I find the slightest hint that anyone could use a compass.
From Morro do Careca, we all hoped that now the Boy Scouts and their chief would take the traditional trail. Our mistake. Once again they took a different direction, and ended up at the Iron Cross.
The Iron Cross is an ancient landmark of a path long disabled by its danger, it has difficult crevices, and would easily lead to the canyons.
It is believed, from the testimonies, that, after passing the Iron Cross, further on, they managed to return to the path commonly used by those who want to reach the peak.
At this time one of the young men suffered an accident when he stepped on a false hole in a hole, and twisted the kneecap of the kneecap.
Osvaldo said in live that he was really injured, needing to undergo medical treatment, although there are many reports that say he did not suffer injury. Undeniable, though, that he felt his knee and that was enough to abort the attack on Pico.
I don't like statements that say, if this, if that. Many think that if Oswald had not hurt Marco Aurélio he would have been alive. I think that if the teenager had not hurt, it would have taken another two hours to reach the Peak, they would have been on the summit irresponsibly for another hour, and they would have put themselves in the same dangerous condition that the missing teenager was exposed to. Assumptions!
Although many want to invent a Conspiracy Theory, claiming that the young Oswald was not injured, these theories have no logical basis. Osvaldo got hurt yes! Nothing serious, but it is common point of all the narratives that the young man stepped on false, and gave a bad way in the knee, which caused him a lot of pain and made it impossible to steady his foot on the ground.
Accidents happen, and if you've never been hurt by it's that your life must be a bore.
They indicate to the young men, and to the chief, that in the face of what happened the ascent to Pico dos Marins was correctly aborted. No one expected anything about it, and according to the survival manuals, they paused to measure everything that happened and be able to make the decisions that were appropriate to the fact.
During the break they fed. The group ate vegetables, mayonnaise and sardines. [11]
At first, the boys say, it was Marco Aurélio' idea to make a kind of net, to carry his friend, but they had difficulty finding the necessary material for this.
... At this moment Ramatis offers to go ahead to seek help and make signs back, Marco Aurélio also offered. Chief Juan decides that Marco would go, because he was more prepared. Ramatis would continue carrying the backpack, Juan and Ricardo would help Osvaldo.
The strategy of creating a stretcher by itself already demonstrates how creative but uneducated the young people were.
A stretcher is for someone unconscious, it's something to do in extreme situations. In this case, the young Osvaldo could lean on a branch, which served as crutches, or on the shoulder of a companion, which happened.
At this moment, they say that Ricardo and Juan (the strongest) supported Osvaldo side by side, Ramatis carried the backpack, and Marco Aurélio went a little ahead 'opening the way'.
Each one who tells this story adds a point.
It seems consensus that a few minutes into this formation, Marco Aurélio himself offered to go ahead to make way.
Of all the history, this is the weirdest point.
Imagine you: the whole gang managed to get lost between the Base and Morro do Careca, between Morro do Careca and the accident site, but now... Now that they were faced with a real stressor, then a young person will be in charge of finding their way back. It seems evident that Marco Aurélio became disoriented and trying to retrace the path, which passed through the Iron Cross, the only path he knew, became disoriented and ended up in the Marins Canyon, from where he lies to this day. [Theory presented in this article].
It is wise that Marco Aurélio received from Oswald a newspaper to warm his chest, a blouse, and came out in front with a chalk delivered by the chief Juan in which he was to make markings along the way. It is known that two markings of '240' were seen, the number that indicated the Olivetano group of scouting, and that the last marking was between two stones, which today is known as Portal.

This is the photo of the said Portal, I took this photo on the site High Mountain, (link https://altamontanha.com/o-desaparecimento-de-marco-aurelio-no-pico-dos-marins/) and this nice figure there is Pedro Hauck, I'll be owed who took the foto.
Following, they say that the group went through two markings made by Marco Aurélio.
It was there, next to the Portal, that Juan decided to follow a different path (on the right) from the one pointed out by Marco Aurélio in his markings (left).
The eternal question is: why put someone to go in front marking the way and then not follow that person!
At that moment they should stop everything start beeping like crazy, and go to a plan B, since plan A did not work. They didn't do that. The Scouts and the chief followed a path alien to the one Marco Aurélio made. And they would never see their colleague again.
Now it was 14:30 or 14:40 p.m
That was the last time anyone claims to have seen Marco Aurélio' marking. 240 written on the Portal.
The theories of what would have happened to the teenager are many.
Some theories. All are assumptions and speculations:
- Disorientation and death from hypothermia or starvation.
- Murder committed by Chief Juan,
- Madness that led the teenager to wander the world ever since.
- Abduction by aliens.
- The boy ran away from the family.
- The boy was kidnapped.
- Death after falling into a crevice or hole, or as a result of injuries caused by it.
- Homicide committed by a resident of the region who mistook him for a thief when he was surprised by the teenager at dawn.
- Murder by maniac or fanatic
- Grooming by fanatical group.
- He would have been killed by an animal and then devoured.
- Marco Aurélio would have arrived at the Refuge of the Marins, and was murdered by the son of his Alfonso, João Carlos, and when his father found out, he would have hidden the body. (It will have a dedicated topic, as it is a recent controversy.)
In a topic of our own here on the site, we will deal with each of these hypotheses.
But before we get into each of these hypotheses, let's talk about the other Scouts and how they painfully managed to return to their homes.
The facts clearly demonstrate that it was not only Marco Aurélio who strayed from his path. Although this one was never found, the boys and the boss also faced a path of struggle for survival!
The journey back home without Marco Aurélio. As of 14:40 p.m.
We know from what was contacted by the SURVIVORS of this ill-fated and disorganized incursion to Pico dos Marins, that Juan and three two scouts were descending towards the State of Minas Gerais, which is clear evidence of disorientation.
Even the least attentive have already observed that the path that leads to the Marins, is made by the upper part of the hill, since on the sides we have a Canion, and a valley.

The most accurate description of the return of the chief and the three scouts is in the article "The hypothesis of disorientation in the Pico dos Marins: Marco Aurélio case in 1985, written by Daniel Iozzi Sperandelli of October 7, 2022", website altamontanha.com (Access this link).
The way back was supposed to last 02 hours, but it took 12. If that's not being completely lost, what is? The thermal sensation was below 0°C.
According to reports, the Scouts believed that Marco Aurélio would be safe and would have arrived at the Marins Base. [11]

When it was midnight, without any protection from the cold, Juan and the scouts were already walking on the mining side of the mountain, not knowing where they were going, with Osvaldo injured, and without news of his fellow traveler Marco Aurélio.
We will continue to talk about June 09, 1985, in the next article.
Serra da Mantiqueira and back to the Refuge, June 09, 1985

The day starts at 00:00, but the Sun rose at 6:36, the Sunset (local) was supposed to happen at 17:23. At 18:00 this day the Moon was Waning Convex 55%.
It was midnight, we know by now that three of thescouts, Ramatis, Osvaldo and Ricardo, with their boss Juan walked seeking to return to the Base of the Marins, home of their Alfonso, but did not go well. They followed another farm, heard the noise of water, and walked incessantly as strategies to survive the cold, which was one of the most intense of the century.
The direction taken was going west.
We know that they arrived in the middle of the night at the house of their Filinho, who received him with the gun in his hands, afraid, thinking they were thieves.

The yellow dotted stroke is the path that we "believe" to have been used by the Scouts and Chief Juan, to return to the Refuge of the Marins, but that led them to the house of their Filinho. This route considers that they did not pass the great obstacle in red.
Now, there is a myth that the chief and three of the scouts got lost on the way back to the Marins Base, for taking the wrong path, but that Marco Aurélio took the right way!
Did Marco Aurélio get the right way, really?
We could think of a tragic, much simpler ending to this story.
Marco Aurélio is also lost! It went the way expected of those who want to get off the mountain by the seemingly "easy" path. Down! And unfortunately it entered the Canyon of the Marins (circle in red in the following image).

For those returning from the Iron Cross, or the Elevator, the left side has the great Canyon of the Marins, a place that has already victimized experienced mountaineers, more recently
The body of Frenchman Eric Welterlin, 54, who disappeared during a running practice at Pico dos Marins, in Piquete (SP), was found during the morning of Saturday (5). The sportsman disappeared on April 16, 2018 (G1 report, click on the link)
It is naïve to believe that the search teams went all over the Canyon in search of the young man. It is stupid to claim that the searches were superficial.
The search for any survivor focuses on places where the person can survive! Thus, it is natural for searches to honor places that someone may be sheltering, to the detriment of places that would be avoided by someone cautious and who is fully aware of their situation, and where they are.
At first it is natural that the focus was on the easiest to access stretches. Little is recorded about the cracks that narrate up to more than 80 meters.
The Marins Canyon is already extremely dangerous!
In our narrative we are in the early hours of a day that will have intense rains. A body, less than fifty pounds, could be carried easily by floods or even buried by sand in a crevice.
Unfortunately, it is quite sad to think about it, but in fact, Marco Aurélio was lost and was challenged by cold, fear and his visual impairment.
I'm sure Marco Aurélio was a hero. He fought bravely, and walked for many miles in search of survival.
We'll never know what really happened, but we can easily assume that the young man went much further than the search area.
It may have advanced to the Canyon and even a little further.
I believe that no one has seen Marco Aurélio is wrong. Even in 1985, the Mantiqueira and the Pico dos Marins region were well attended. Many made the invitation to go along with the chief and the Boy Scouts. But we were coming out of a dictatorship and no one wanted to have to give evidence to the police.
Around 3 a.m. WITHOUT Marco Aurélio.
Juan and the Boy Scouts arrive at their Filinho's farm. He received the scouts and the chief with gun in hand, thinking they were robbers.
Juan talked to his Filinho, who said that they were 6km from the base of the Marins already on the mining side of the mountain.
The chief and the three Boy Scouts, all true survivors, arrived at Marine Base by road around 5 a.m.
Back to the Marins' Refuge
After nearly 20 hours of walking among rocks and woods, the group arrived at the Marins Base and found the tent nearly knocked over. And overturned!
The Boy Scouts eat condensed milk from a can, and sleep succumbing to extreme fatigue.
At 6:30
Juan goes out alone to search for Marco Aurélio.
Everyone who hears about the disappearance of the Scout thinks at first that Chief Juan returned alone to look for Marco Aurélio because he wanted to "solve" the problem resulting from his series of absurd and irresponsible actions.
Finding Marco Aurélio after being lost with the Boy Scouts he was supposed to take care of would be a way to drown out the story, and make it all a great story.
It turns out, the first few hours of someone lost in a forest is critical. With each passing hour the search area increases by 3km in each direction. Another point is that with a night of thermal sensation of minus 0°C, the young person could be facing hypothermia.
A fact that, once again, by having placed the ego of his youth to the people of reason, the young chief Juan would become the center of all mistrust, the number one suspect, and because of this he would pay a very expensive price.
Juan says that from 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. he retraced the path by looking for Marco Aurélio alone.
Pray! At what point between 5:30 and 6:30 did Juan learn the way?!
Juan, who had been completely lost for the past few hours, suddenly became an expert and started looking for Marco.
We can conclude that Juan kept going around there, blowing the whistle hard. For if he had the ability to explore the place, he would not have gone through what he went through.
10:30 a.m. arrives at the Refuge Chief Paulinho, as arranged he came from Kombi to pick up the scouts to take back to Piquete-SP, so they can return home. It was the agreed-upon one.
Paulinho surprised the scouts in the tent, understood later to be because of the journey of almost 24 hours.
At that time there was no cell phone, and in the Refuge there was no telephone. Then knowing the disappearance of the scout, Paulinho returned to the barrier, contacted the chief Gugu, of the Puris group of Piquete-SP, and with reinforcement of 05 more men, began to look for Marco Aurélio.
Unfortunately, once again they return to the woods to carry out the search, but do not warn the police or firefighters!
The day promised a storm! Even with a lot of fog - recalls the boss Paulinho. [11]
Where was Marco Aurélio meanwhile. Marco Aurélio from 14:40 on June 08, 1985 until 5:00 on the 09th?
Hypotheses treated in social networks and YouTube show that:
- Marco Aurélio would have arrived at a farm at dawn, asking for help, as did the chief Juan and the scouts, in the house of his Filinho, and that, like this resident, he also thought he was a thief, this unfortunately shot Marco Aurélio, and then hid the body.
- Along the same lines, there are the assumptions that it would have been a resident of the second house at the Marins Base, who mistook Marco Aurélio for a burglar and shot him. Many reports on the Internet defend the story that the independence of the Boy Scouts and Juan for not using the "services" as a guide, of the residents of the Marins Base, would have caused discontent of these. For the residents of the place had in the services and guide and sale of some products and rental of place and bathroom one of the few sources of income. Possibly this story is just a myth that has gained traction since the former residents have died and can no longer defend themselves.
- Who, disoriented Marco Aurélio entered a Canyon and injured himself, being unable to continue his journey and return to the Marins Base, awaiting help where he would die due to hypothermia.
- Other assumptions are that Marco Aurélio may have been seen by people who didn't want to speak because in the absence of an alibi to be there, they could be pointed out as suspicious.
We were coming out of the dictatorship, and an interrogation in those days was a very bad thing. There were many cases of false confessions by people who could not stand the pressure and torture.
I know a lot of people who were born after the Boy Scout disappeared, but easily confessed guilt in the tragedy if they were tortured for 30 seconds.
Late afternoon, and the interruption of the search, 16:30 p.m.
Weather conditions made it impossible to continue the search.
It is important to highlight this moment. Marco Aurélio could have survived the first night, but what about the storm that prevented even the adults from carrying out the search?
At 17:15 p.m. the police are warned.
Because it is so long, these days will be divided. The following article will deal with what happened from 17:16 on June 09, 1985, including the strange case of the scream in the woods and the blue light.
Soon continues in an upcoming article...
The evening of June 09, 1985 at the Marins Refuge.
Here we will tell you about the night of Sunday, June 09, 1985, because this one deserves a dedicated chapter.
The day before, at 14:40 p.m., Scout Marco Aurélio separates from the group he was part of with three other scouts and a chief, and disappears.
He faces the coldest night of 1985, one of the coldest years in Marins history. The search begins at 6:30 a.m. on the 09th, by Chief Juan, and later with some scout chiefs of Piquete-SP, at 17:15 p.m. that day the police are warned, when the search is interrupted, due to an intense storm.
There was no way I could look for Marco Aurélio because he had a season out there.
Those who tell this story often ignore that Marco Aurélio was out there!
If Marco Aurélio stood still last night, he may have died of hypothermia, and would have been found since the area near the last site he was seen was heavily searched. But if he did not stay quiet, he kept himself active and warm, in these conditions he went away.
Following the path of the waters would be a good start if you want to look for a body.
I'm sad to write this, but it's an appeal to reason: a skinny teenager, less than 50 kg, visually impaired, alone for the first time between a mountain of stone and a dense forest, on the coldest day of the year, of one of the coldest years of the century, and even if out of heroism the boy survived that night, Did he survive the storm?
History says yes, at least the first few hours of the storm!

[Illustrative image, source: click here]
They say that, on the night of June 09, 1985, Maria Maria wife of your Alfonso prepared a soup, and everyone drank it. They were at his Alfonso's house.
At that moment they heard a whistle, automatically everyone left the house, and Juan advanced forward, going into the woods.
Juan says he went to a second house and there he found a woman, who, questioning, said he had not seen anything. [13].
Juan details it this way: we were waiting at his Alfonso's house, because we had no way to go, when we heard screams. He says that, he can't say, but it sounded like Marco Aurélio, and they also heard whistles. They knew that Marco Aurélio had a whistle. He asked everyone to be silent and pay attention. At this time they opened the door and saw 'the light'. The light was not blue, as advertised, but with a tendency more towards blue than white. And the light wobbled like someone walking. Juan says that when he gets there, 'everything is dark'. Then a lady who was there, but who had not been before, hearing the screams came out. This woman denied seeing or hearing anything.
At the time there was indeed this third house, but this fact was never taken seriously by the police authorities, and was not investigated.
Strangely even having as witness three scouts and Juan, his Alfonso denied having seen!
One big mistake in the search for the missing Scout is that the first search inside a Boy Scout would take place in 2021, more than 36 years later.
It cannot be denied that Marco Aurélio was hidden in a house in the region.
Later that night Chief Gugu takes Chief Juan and the three Boy Scouts to his house. Just then they called Marco Aurélio' parents. This happened between 22 p.m. or 23 p.m.
They slept in Chief Gugu's house.
June 10, 1985, Monday
the sun rose at 6:35, sunset (local) 17:23, Solar noon 11:59
Warned the authorities of the disappearance of the scout yesterday at 17:15 p.m., this morning, June 10, 1985 begins one of the largest searches in Brazil,
OPERATION MARINS.
Hundreds of people were looking for the boy, but in all the narratives we noticed serious problems in the search. Before we go to the description of each action, we will point out some questions, so that you can make a rereading of the events.
Problems pointed out in the searches:
1. Law enforcement authorities, especially the military, were looking for clues to a crime. A murder with concealment of a corpse. When it follows only one line of inquiry, the other possibilities are forgotten. At the most important moment of the searches, other hypotheses were ignored.
2. The military was part of the search by walking in line along existing trails. This fact was criticized by the mateiro his Afonso, according to reports. [10]
3. Law enforcement officials ignored the possibility of crimes possibly committed by residents or third parties who were in the area that weekend. There are many reports of strange people who were there, there are still reports about tents set up and vehicles parked. These other people were not investigated. All suspicions fell on Chief Juan.
4. There is no record of searches on private property, inside houses.
5. The repeated invasions of the camp were not thoroughly investigated, in which the tent was overturned and utensils and belongings were manipulated and stolen.
6. There is no scheme in the inquiry to say that the Canyon of the Marins, and the waterways have been traversed completely.
But after all, how were the searches?
I find it disrespectful to many of the criticisms made against the search teams, whether the criticisms made against civilians or the military. It's very easy for outsiders to point out mistakes.
Every operation has hits and misses, and one cannot measure a team's dedication by success in locating the missing person. Many extraordinary search operations were unsuccessful, even though they strictly followed the protocols in place at the time of their execution.
Thus, at this point I limit myself to transcribing what was contacted by those who were acting with the searches.
10:00 - approximate time.
Lieutenant of the PM Airton Ribeiro da Costa, Lorena-SP, upon arriving at the size takes notice of the disappearance. In an interview he says he was amazed that they warned the police in almost 48 hours. (It was not 48 hours, but about 30 hours, which, is already a very long time). The Lieutenant, now retired, is thrilled, claiming to have done his duty. [11].

Major Edmundo Zaboski will be in charge of the search.
Today I will the first day of searches, but the operation would take more than a month.
Soon we will deal in a new article about searches.
Demystifying some points of the Marco Aurélio Affair.
Details Hits: 155 No comments on "Demystifying some points of the Marco Aurélio Case."
The path from the Marins Base (Refugio dos Marins) to the Pico dos Marins is easy to orient, because those who are on the Pico dos Marins can see the cities below.
It's FALSE!
Naturally on a sunny winter afternoon, and you being at the top of the peak or on some rock, you will get a beautiful photo of the horizon. But below the top and more exactly below the Morro do Careca what exists is Atlantic Forest. See the photo below:

[Photo obtained from the website: https://trekkingbrasil.com/pico-marins/ Authorship of the article attributed to By EDGAR PERLOTTI 20 February, 2014].
Even if you are halfway you will find the so-called Elephant Bush, which is a type of very tall grass, which greatly hinders seeing the path. Marco Aurélio was almost blind in one eye, the other saw about 40 or 50%, which was already difficult to make him an even greater challenge.
The whole region has been surveyed, and it is impossible for Marco Aurélio to be there.
IT'S FALSE.
I talk about this in one of the articles. Although the volunteers and military have done their best, there are many points that would need special attention. An observation made by visitors to the region, is the existence of holes in the ground.

[This image is a screenshot of the video, Operation Marins: Disappearance of Scout Marco Aurélio, from the AltaMontanha Channel, presented by Pedro Hauck, accessed in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2gUifNAtSk]
If even in the face of heavy rains, and these holes being at the end of the path of "false trails", why don't they fill? This is because there are cracks there. Though sadly, we need to question whether any of these crevices would not house a body of less than fifty pounds?
Did Marco Aurélio arrive at the refuge of the Marins and be brutally murdered by the son of his Alfonso?
Until the reopening of the case more than 30 (thirty) years after the disappearance of the teenager, there were no investigations on this subject. But we will dedicate a topic of this Special just to treat these theories. Hold on!
Was Marco Aurélio abducted or taken to another dimension?
So... It is important to remember that children and adolescents disappear every year all over the world. There is even an International Day of the Missing Child (May 25), the day being used to raise awareness of the cause.
Investigation indicates that most are related to crimes and escape of minors.
Justifying the disappearance of a teenager by simplifying that he was abducted is rather negligent.
There's a quote from Carl Sagam, hated by urologists, that states, "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence."
The only hint that Marco Aurélio would be in another dimension after being abducted is the Blue Light episode. (Read about her HERE)
If someone told me that they heard a whistle in the woods, then screams, a blue light, followed by silence. I would imagine someone in the woods would be asking for help and was silenced by someone else who found him for having a blue lantern. Assumptions...
The hazing
Another theory that runs through the internet with no known authorship is that Marco Aurélio died during a hazing made on the night of the 07th. And according to this theory the young man would already be dead on the morning of the 08th, and all the winds of that day would be to hide his body. The theory is reminiscent of Lois Dunca's book "I Know What You Did Last Summer," which was adapted into a movie.
Those who hold this theory seem incredulous at the succession of errors, and without understanding how, after Juan's mistakes, there is still the boys' fidelity to the boss, who, from the official history, seemed completely bewildered.
Another point that leads people to believe this theory, is the fact that practically everyone involved opts for silence these days.
Even the scouts who were never accused, today vehemently deny talking about the subject, as happened recently in the postcast aired on Globo Play in which only Ricardo spoke.
But there are those who deny this theory, claiming that in the face of everything that happened, they would eventually tell the truth if an accident had happened. For they were teenagers, and at home, instructed by their families, they would not carry such a secret for nearly 40 years.
Search poster made by the family.

Hypotheses Marco Aurélio Case
Attention! This article concerns a true case of disappearance. If you can contribute to the truth, immediately communicate to the police, or the family of Marco Aurélio by e-mail:
Have you ever wondered if the truth hypothesis about a crime was that you, or someone you love, brutally murdered a teenager? Terrible, right? So let's be cautious.
Here I want to point out some hypotheses, since these have been treated by several sources. And here I want to make a few points.
According to the article that dealt with June 08, 1985, some theories. All are assumptions and speculations:
Disorientation and death from hypothermia or starvation.
More sensible and rational hypothesis. It has as supporters several mountaineers and experts who know well the region of the accident.
The point against this theory is that supposedly the search teams would have exhausted the search sites, and where the boy's body could rest.
Murder committed by Chief Juan,

This hypothesis has been taken seriously by the police, the press and the people.
The point against is that they never found evidence, nor motivation for the crime.
Madness that led the teenager to wander the world ever since.
If he had a reason, madness would not be madness. But would a young person without any history of mental disturbance do that?
Abduction by aliens.
Proponents of this hypothesis owe us evidence of this. That assumption has already been addressed here.
The boy ran away from the family.
And was he running away right in the middle of the Marins, when his friends were counting on him for help? Without saying that he ran away with the clothes on his body, without money, with nothing?
The boy was kidnapped.
Although it is a fact that other people were in the Marins on the day of the disappearance, during the search there was no ransom demand. The ones that happened much later were hoaxes
Death after falling into a crevice or hole, or as a result of injuries caused by it.
This hypothesis is only one strand of Disorientation and death. He became disoriented, lost, fell, injured, and died.
Homicide committed by a resident of the region who mistook him for a thief when he was surprised by the teenager at dawn.
Hypothesis already treated here, and many attribute the family of his Alfonso.
I believe that these accusations are cowardly, and are only sustained because they have already died and cannot defend themselves.
His Alfonso assisted in all the searches and found no evidence that he was a murderer. In fact, all who lived with him claim to be a simple man of noble conduct.
Murder by maniac or fanatic
This hypothesis cannot be ruled out, although there is no evidence of this exactly because the police stopped collecting them. Unfortunately the police completely failed in the investigation taking as a suspect the chief Juan, failed to follow other investigative lines.
We know that there were tents set up on the site. This is confirmed by several. And they never even investigated who the people were. The presence of a vehicle was also almost completely ignored.
Grooming by fanatical group.
To say that an intelligent 15-year-old magically became enthralled by a mystical doctrine in a quick contact one afternoon is somewhat fanciful. Although abduction by radical groups or cult members has never been investigated or taken seriously by law enforcement.
There are those who cite a sect, the Blue Butterfly, but notes from religious groups without concrete evidence is at first related to prejudice.
He would have been killed by an animal and then devoured.
The credibility of this theory is questioned since, the death by animal leaves many evidences. Unlike a human (murderer), animals do not clean up traces or hide evidence. It would have in that case clothes and body parts. The attack of an animal leaves traces. Many! And although it is possible to find in the Serra da Mantiqueira of maned wolves and jaguars, none, even if it were capable of a fatal attack, could not devour a human being of fifty kilos.
He would have been murdered by his Alfonso's son
This hypothesis that emerged on social networks, especially on WhatsApp, made in 2022 and 2023 the most debated theory.
Proponents of this theory claim that John, the son of his Alfonso would have frightened Marco Aurélio who arrived asking for help alone, and because John had an intellectual disability, would have killed the boy. Then Alfonso would have hidden the body of Marco Aurélio.
Proponents of this theory claim that all searches were made from his Alfonso's house upwards, and that his Alfonso would have buried the body of Marco Aurélio below. Soon they would never have searched the burial site of the body.
This theory, "constructed" more than thirty years later, appears in the family of his Alfonso. Since one of his daughters even dug holes in the place looking for a body.
yes, a body. But not the body of Marco Aurélio, but the body of the poor boy, John, who disappeared in the same region and was forgotten because he was poor.
Those who do not believe in this theory, believe that blaming the "crazy" of history is a great prejudice. Intellectually disabled carry the stigma of "evil"
Beware of the crazy - says many mothers who want to scare their children.
But in fact, intellectual/mental handicapped people are mostly not dangerous, and when they do commit a crime they don't care about details or perfections. In this case, his Alfonso would be the intellectual mentor of the concealment of the corpse.
That theory caused the case to reopen.

If your Alfonso's family had money, you can be sure that someone would be suing someone for such dishonorable charges.
In our curiosity, and in the demon that lives within each one, it is possible to think, for example, that your Alfonso was angry with the Scouts, for staying in his land and not paying him anything, nor hiring him to accompany them. His Afonso needed that money and was angry because he expected this work, as the reports say, he was already with the food arranged to take the young people. And in this, overcome with hatred, he implemented a plan to disappear with one of the boys, and succeeded as Marco Aurélio arrived there alone. Opportunity and luck together, Alfonso killed the boy, and hid it. But in this other hypothesis John saw everything, and Alfonso would have asked him to keep the secret. But since Alfonso knew that his son freaked out when he didn't take the medicines, he always insisted that his son take the medicine. It turns out that one day John refused to take the medicines and went into the woods. Alfonso went after him, and found him talking about the death of the lost boy. Afraid of the secret being revealed, Alfonso kills his own son, and buries him where the scout lay, putting an end to his worry of having the secret revealed.
Could this be possible? Yes. But it may also be yet another absurd and disrespectful theory that offends the image of some people already resting in death.
In fact, this case will not end. Rest assured that soon other theories will come.
For my part, I register my total solidarity with the family of your Ivo and your Alfonso for the loss of their children. I'm sure many people get hurt by unsubstantiated speculations, and I will always be here for the rational handling of everything that happened. If nothing serves to bring the truth about the Scout, let it serve as a lesson, so that other people do not disappear in this region.
